Here's my sample review that I wrote about a restaurant I waitressed at in college!
I love restaurants where the wait staff knows your name. Tony’s Restaurant in Saginaw, Michigan, is a greasy-spoon, hometown experience that everyone must try at least once in their life. When you walk through the doors, the aroma of the classic Steak Sandwich will call your name. David, the owner and Vietnam vet, will smile and shake your hand, especially if he hasn’t met you before. And the menu? It’s hard to beat.
Deciding what to eat is a daunting task on its own because everything that comes out of the kitchen is made from scratch. Even though the menu will make your heart palpitate, anything you choose will make your taste buds sing. What would I recommend? Definitely the Tony’s Steak Sandwich. This sandwich has been around since the 1960s, when the restaurant was first opened by David’s great-grandfather. It’s made on thick-sliced Italian bread made at the local Spatz’s bakery. The warm bread hugs a grilled cube steak, smothered with your choice of mozzarella or American cheese and mushrooms if you’d like. What makes the sandwich truly special is the salty tomato sauce slathered on top. If you’re like me, though, and you don’t like wearing a huge bib while you eat, ask for the sauce on the side. I love it with grilled bread – I’m telling you, the added butter puts it over the top. I know, I know. It's butter. Trust me; it's worth the extra few miles you'll have to run to burn off the calories.
Tony’s has a plethora of other choices – enormous burritos, gigantic plates of nachos, chili cheese fries that will require heartburn medicine, and amazing fried fish. And you can’t leave without at least tasting some type of delectable dessert. From homemade pies, to hand mixed shakes and strawberry shortcake, there’s something for everyone. If you’re dining with a large group, you can make your meal perfect by ordering the banana split. There’s enough ice cream for a group of 6. Trust me, you can’t eat it on your own.
If you’re lucky enough to visit my hometown, don’t leave without visiting Tony’s. You won’t be disappointed and you’ll be talking about it for years to come!
